At the end of 2015 Amazon had 230,800 full-time and part-time
employees. This amount significantly increased to 341,000 by the end of 2016. In
January Amazon said they had plans to hire 100,000 more full-time workers in
the next 18 months as well as 30,000 part-time workers in the U.S. over the
next year, including 5,000 positions that will allow employees to work from
home as customer service representatives. These new employees will work 20 or
more hours and receive benefits.
Amazon values its employees as all of it’s part-time workers are eligible for a Career Choice program that pre-pays 95% of an employee’s tuition if he or she is working in a field that Amazon says are “in demand.”
Amazon’s grand plan is to manage every aspect of it’s
shipping and distribution network, as it builds its own cargo airline hubs and
ocean freight-shipping network. Recently they were awarded a license by the Federal
Maritime Commission to operate as ocean freight forwarder in the United
States. This makes perfect business sense and clearly establishing dominance as
e-commerce market leaders while making it easier for their sellers who source
goods from China. For these companies it’s quite the convenience as goods could
be shipped from China directly into Amazon’s fulfillment centers. Items Fulfilled
By Amazon (FBA) has a big advantage over other companies such as eBay and Shopify,
which currently do not house goods for their customers, and this only makes it
more enticing to leverage amazon's infrastructure making money online as a new small business
owner or a seasoned entrepreneur.
Amazon continues to expand as the company has plans to boost
the number of logistics facilities across the U.S. in the coming years and although their employee count is far behind its main competitor
Wal-Mart , Amazon still remains market leader in online sales.
